The picturesque golf course in Digboi, located amidst pristine surroundings, has the distinction of being the first 18-holes golf course in Assam. Established in 1930 by the British, the course was shifted to the present location in 1943, making it one of the oldest in this region. The course is located adjacent to the forests of the century old Digboi Oilfields. Wild animals like the elephant, leopard, deer, etc. and various species of birds like the Hornbill are sometimes spotted here. The Dehing Forest Reserve runs along the northern side of the course, while the national highway No. 38 runs on the southern side, about 300 meters away, with a railway line running parallel to the highway between the road and the course.
An interesting feature of this course is an airstrip that was built during World War II, which now forms part of the fifth fairway. The original features have been retained and anti-aircraft pillboxes still exist here. Hole No. 3 is named “Firing Line-Pillbox.” Hole No. 11 where the remains of an oil well is located is appropriately named “Captain’s Well 992” as it is near this hole that the well was drilled, and inaugurated by the then Golf Captain. With the rare hornbill making an occasional appearance, Hole no.17 is appropriately named “Hornbills' Haunt”.
The course length of Digboi Golf Course is 6309 yards, the longest hole being 513 yards and the shortest being 127 yards. The course rating is 71 and Par is 72. This golf course is a natural one with few artificial developments. The undulating topography ensures that golfers have to use all their skills in order to keep the ball on the fairways. The ubiquitous nullahs and treacherous roughs can catch many an unsuspecting soul unawares, so course strategy is of paramount importance, posing a challenge to even the most seasoned professional.
The Digboi Club Golf Course, is playable throughout the year and several major tournaments are held here. While competitions with local golfers and those from nearby clubs are played throughout the year, the All Assam Amateur Golf Tournament and the Servo Masters Golf Tournament, are two of the major annual events that are held on the course with the latter being the region’s only professional event coordinated by PGTI. Historic Digboi Golf Links is also part of the McDowell’s Signature Club Golf Championship, India’s largest amateur golf event. The 9th edition of this prestigious tournament was played at Digboi Golf Links in 2010.
