CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
- Shubhankar Sharma registered the best finish by an Indian at The Open when he secured tied eighth place at the 2023 edition staged at Royal Liverpool in England. In 2023, Shubhankar also claimed tied seventh place finishes at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the Horizon Irish Open on the DP World Tour.
- The highlight of Shubhankar Sharma’s 2022 DP World Tour season was his outstanding tied second finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship which earned him his biggest ever prize money cheque of Euro 610,736. Shubhankar also took third place at the Nedbank Golf Challenge to end the season at a creditable 29th place in the Race to Dubai Rankings.
- Sharma posted a tied third finish at the Acciona Open De Espana on the DP World Tour in 2021. He also had three other top-10s on the tour in the same season.
- In 2019, Shubhankar Sharma posted tied seventh finishes at the European Tour’s Italian Open and Turkish Airlines Open. He also secured joint second place on the PGTI at the PGTI Players Championship at Classic Golf & Country Club. Sharma made the cut at the British Open for the second year running in only his second appearance at the event.
- In 2018, Shubhankar became the youngest Indian at age 22 to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit title. The same year he also became the first Indian to win the European Tour’s Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award after claiming a creditable 28th place in the Race to Dubai rankings.
- Sharma became the first Indian to lead the European Tour Race to Dubai when he achieved his second European Tour triumph with a final round of 62 at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia in February 2018. It took him to the top of the European Tour and Asian Tour money lists. Shubhankar then went on to finish a laudable tied ninth after holding the 36-hole and 54-hole lead at the WGC – Mexico Championship in his very first appearance at a PGA Tour and WGC event. That earned him an invite to the Masters 2018.
- The week following the WGC – Mexico Championship, Sharma bagged tied seventh place at the Hero Indian Open 2018 (European & Asian Tour co-sanctioned event) and rose to a career-best 64 in the world rankings. The same season he also recorded a tied sixth at the Honma Hong Kong Open (European & Asian Tour co-sanctioned event) and tied 10th at the CIMB Classic (PGA & Asian Tour co-sanctioned event).
- The year 2018 saw Shubhankar appear at all four Majors. He became the youngest Indian to play the Masters (21 years and eight months), US Open (21 years and 10 months) and PGA Championship (22 years and 19 days). He also became the youngest Indian to make the cut at a Major when he achieved the feat on the eve of his 22nd birthday at the British Open 2018.
- Shubhankar Sharma was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2018.
- Shubhankar became the youngest Indian winner on the European Tour at the age of 21 when he bagged the Joburg Open, a tournament jointly sanctioned by the European, Asian & Sunshine Tours, in December 2017. The victory earned him a berth at the 2018 British Open. With a win and four other top-10s on the Asian Tour in 2017 he finished seventh on the Order of Merit in Asia. His other top results of the year were tied ninth at Maybank Championship and tied 10th at UBS Hong Kong Open (both European & Asian Tour co-sanctioned events) as well as tied fourth at Bashundhara Bangladesh Open and tied ninth at Leopalace21 Myanmar Open (both Asian Tour events).
- Sharma won the TAKE Open and the season-ending McLeod Russel Tour Championship on the PGTI in 2017.
- In 2016, Shubhankar earned his first full card on the Asian Tour after coming through the Qualifying School. He enjoyed two top-5 results in his rookie season on the Asian Tour – third at the Bashundhara Bangladesh Open and tied fourth at the Resorts World Manila Masters – thus finishing inside the top-60 and earning an exemption for 2017.
- He had an outstanding 2016 season on the PGTI having bagged three titles – PGTI Players Championship at Eagleton, Kolkata Classic and 15th TATA Open – along with seven other top-10s. He finished a career-high third on the Rolex Ranking in 2016.
- Sharma finished sixth in the 2015 Rolex Ranking with four top-3s on the PGTI. The same year he was runner-up at the TAKE Solutions India Masters (joint sanctioned by Asian Development Tour and PGTI) and joint runner-up at the PGTI Cochin Masters. He lost in the playoff to compatriot Chikkarangappa at the TAKE Solutions India Masters. He also finished tied fourth at the Asian Tour’s Panasonic Open India 2015.
- Shubhankar was fourth at the Panasonic Open India 2014 (Asian Tour).
- Sharma’s one win and six other top-10s during the 2014 PGTI season helped him finish 13th in the Rolex Ranking. His victory at the PGTI Cochin Masters helped him set the record for becoming the youngest winner on the PGTI at the age of 17 years and eight months. The record was later broken by Karandeep Kochhar in 2016 who achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and five months.
- In his rookie season on the PGTI in 2013, Shubhankar secured three top-10s. His best result was tied fifth at the 12th TATA Open.
- Shubhankar won the All India Amateur Championship in 2012 at the age of 16.
- Sharma was India’s No. 1 junior prior to turning professional in 2013.
