Lahiri's opening round 66 gives him flying start at Wells Fargo Championship
India’s Anirban Lahiri got off to a flying start at the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship when he fired a bogey-free six-under-66 to lie one shot off the lead in third place after the first round on Thursday.
The reigning Asian Tour number one, rolled in six birdies, three each on the front nine and back nine. He made a big par save from 12 feet on the last hole to move into contention for a maiden title on the PGA Tour.
He trails American duo Steve Wheatcroft and Andrew Loupe.
“It’s a good solid round. I’ve been playing good but have not been consistent. I went back home after the Masters and worked on a few things with my coach,” said the 28-year-old, who is now based in Florida.
He was delighted with how he finished his day, rolling a nice putt on 15 and then saving par at the end with a curling right to left putt.
“There’re not too many easy putts around here, so it was good to get that in,” said Lahiri, who has made seven cuts in 10 starts in the US this year.
In the European Tour’s King Hassan Trophy in Morocco, India’s Shiv Kapur carded an even-par-72 to lie four shots off the lead in joint 33rd position.
