Lahiri begins season with a superb 64 to be joint leader at CareerBuilder Challenge

India’s Anirban Lahiri had a dream start to the 2016 season as he posted a superb eight-under-64 at the PGA Tour’s CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta, California, to share the first round lead with Americans Jason Dufner, Jerry Kelly and Jeff Overton.

While Lahiri and Kelly played at the La Quinta Course, Dufner and Overton opened on PGA West's Nicklaus Tournament Course.

PGA Tour rookie Anirban, who represented Team Asia at the EurAsia Cup last week in Malaysia, had an outstanding run of eight birdies during his bogey-free opening round. He sank four birdies each on the front-nine and back-nine.

"Obviously, still feeling the fatigue from all the travel coming in from Asia. I was hitting it 5 to 10 per cent shorter on the front-nine compared to the back-nine. My body is feeling it’s way back in. But really happy with the overall effort," Lahiri said.

He added, "It’s nice to start the 2016 season with this round. I don't think I missed a green all day.

“It was good to go out there early and get first use on the greens. It’s a good track which has been set up well. If you find fairways, you will give yourself a look at a lot of birdies as the greens are also rolling well."

Meanwhile, at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, Shiv Kapur, the lone Indian in the field, shot a two-over-74 to be in tied 102nd, 10 strokes off the lead.
