Jeev Milkha Singh stages grand comeback for first round victory at Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play

Shiv Kapur crashes out after squandering early lead

India's Jeev Milkha Singh staged a grand comeback to win his first round match and reach the last 32 at the inaugural Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play in Aberdeen, Scotland. Shiv Kapur, the other Indian in the field however, crashed out of the tournament after squandering an early lead.

Jeev snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Australian Scott Hend on Thursday. The seasoned 43-year-old was 4 down at the turn despite having birdied the ninth for a half. But Singh came back roaring by winning the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th, with birdies on the first three, to go one ahead.

Hend claimed the 16th hole to get back to all square before Jeev finally went on to clinch an unlikely win with a 1 Up margin after pocketing the 17th.

Kapur, on the other hand, let a lead of three holes slip away, as he lost out to home favourite Richie Ramsay of Scotland. Shiv was 3 up after seven holes but Ramsay made a charge by claiming the eighth, 11th, 14th and 17th holes, to finally win with a 1 Up margin.

Ramsay took the lead for the first time in the match when he picked up a shot on the 17th. The Scotsman sealed the match with a second straight birdie on the 18th where he sank a 20-footer to neutralize Kapur’s excellent approach to eight feet that also led to a birdie.
