Anirban Lahiri grabs fifth place finish at European Masters

Indian now ninth in Race to Dubai

India’s Anirban Lahiri (67-67-70-64) produced yet another breathtaking performance as he posted a final round of six-under-64 at the European Masters in Switzerland to bag a fifth place finish at the prestigious European Tour and Asian Tour co-sanctioned event. Lahiri totalled 12-under-268 for the week to finish five shots behind champion Danny Willett of England.

Anirban, a two-time winner on the European Tour this year, has now moved up to ninth place in the European Tour Race to Dubai standings having crossed the mark of 1 million Euros in earnings in his debut season. He has also built a substantial lead of over half a million dollars in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

After being left disappointed with a third round 70, Lahiri responded perfectly by trading seven birdies against one bogey to sign off convincingly and climb six places from overnight tied 11th.

“It was a relief (to finish well) as I’ve been playing well but just haven’t been able to put a together a good round.

“It was a good feeling to play well on the back-nine as I had been struggling there the last few rounds. It’s good to finish with a 64 as I did the exact same thing with a 64 last year too,” said Lahiri.

Lahiri, the highest-placed Asian in the field, believes he will return as another genuine contender with the invaluable experience gained.

“The experience of being here many times showed especially on the greens. There were some tricky pins which I’ve seen before and having been here a few times, you now know where to hit it, how it’s going to break and that made a massive difference,” said Lahiri.

Anirban, who finished an impressive tied 30th at The Open last week, is now set to make gains in the world rankings where he is currently 61 and also in the Presidents Cup standings of the International Team where he currently lies 11th.

Shiv Kapur and SSP Chawrasia both ended tied 24th at five-under-275.

Jyoti Randhawa occupied tied 37th place at three-under-277 while Rashid Khan was tied 68th at seven-over-287.
