Gangjee tied sixth at halfway stage of AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open
Lahiri misses cut at The Players
India’s Rahil Gangjee (67-70) birdied three of his last seven holes for a one-under-70 in round two of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. He was thus placed tied sixth at five-under-137 at the halfway stage of the tournament. The lead was held by Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen at nine-under-133.
Gangjee, who is half Mauritian, was two-over for the day at the Heritage Golf Club before he rallied with birdies on the 12th, 14th and 18th holes at the inaugural €1 million (approximately US$1.1 million) tournament tri-sanctioned by the European, Asian and Sunshine Tours.
In contrast to his opening round which was wet and windy, Rahil failed to take advantage of near ideal conditions at the Heritage course, dropping bogeys on four and 11. But he got his putter hot coming home to remain in contention for a second Asian Tour victory.
“When you go from windy conditions to totally no wind, it takes some adjustment. It just threw me off a bit,” said Gangjee. “And I didn’t make too many putts on the front nine. I just kept at it and made a few bogeys but I knew there were some birdies out there. I just stayed patient.”
Looking ahead to the weekend rounds, Rahil added, “I just need to keep to my strategy as this course needs that. If it gets too windy, you just want to get the job done and not be thinking about the score or chasing anybody. You could get too caught up with that and lose your focus.”
Gaganjeet Bhullar (72-71) was the other Indian who made the cut. He was tied 63rd at one-over-143.
Among the Indians who missed the halfway cut of one-over-143, were Rashid Khan (two-over-144), Shiv Kapur (three-over-145) and Arjun Atwal (eight-over-150).
Meanwhile, at the PGA Tour's The Players being played at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, Anirban Lahiri (76-72) fired an even-par-72 in the second round to miss the cut by four shots.
