Shiv Kapur secures tied 23rd at US Open, records best finish by an Indian at the event

Second-best result for India at the Majors

India’s Shiv Kapur (73-70-71-72) enjoyed a solid finish at the US Open when he closed with a two-over-72 for a share of 23rd place on Sunday. Kapur thus posted the best finish by an Indian at the second Major of the year. The previous best for an Indian at the US Open was Jeev Milkha Singh's tied 36th in 2007.

Shiv's performance at Pinehurst No. 2 also accounted for India's second-best result at the Majors so far. Jeev Milkha Singh's tied ninth at the PGA Championship in 2008 has been the best finish by an Indian at a Major championship till date. Jeev's tied 25th at the US Masters 2008 was the only other occasion when an Indian finished inside the top-25 at a Major.

The 32-year-old Kapur, who is a winner of  three international titles including one on the Asian Tour, mixed his card with two birdies against four bogeys for a six-over-286 total. Shiv had a poor start to the day with bogeys on the first two holes. He then dropped another stroke on the sixth to be three-over at the turn. The Delhi golfer, playing his third Major, had a much better back-nine which saw him make two birdies against one bogey.

Kapur ended up sharing 23rd place along with international star Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and finished one shot ahead of American Phil Mickelson, another global star.

Shiv has now improved on his previous best at a Major event which was tied 73rd at last year's British Open.

Kapur finished 15 shots from the winner, Martin Kaymer of Germany, who completed a wire-to-wire victory to claim his second Major championship title. Shiv was however, the highest-placed Asian in the field at tied 23rd. Japanese Hideki Matsuyama was the next best Asian in tied 35th place.

Shiv's US Open exploits are likely to boost his world ranking which currently stands at 177.
