Shiv Kapur makes the cut at the US Open with a fighting 70 in round two, lies tied 33rd

India’s Shiv Kapur (73-70) made it to the weekend rounds of the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 after shooting a solid even-par-70 in round two to be placed tied 33rd with a three-over-143 total. Kapur, playing his maiden US Open, has now become the second Indian after Jeev Milkha Singh to make the cut at the second Major of the year.

Martin Kaymer of Germany was the leader at the halfway stage with a 10-under-130 total. The cut fell at five-over-145. Sixty-six professionals and one amateur made the cut.

Shiv Kapur soared 35 places from his overnight tied 68th position as a result of a round that featured three birdies and a triple-bogey. The 32-year-old from Delhi, making his third Major appearance, was quick off the blocks in round two with birdies on the third and fifth. Shiv then added another birdie on the 11th to all but seal his spot for the weekend rounds. The triple-bogey on the 16th however, pulled him back to even-par for the day.

Kapur is now in with a chance to improve on Jeev Milkha Singh’s tied 36th finish at the 2007 US Open, the best-ever result by an Indian at the tournament. Arjun Atwal, the only other Indian to play the US Open, had missed the cut in his only appearance at the event in 2010.

Shiv’s resilient second round show at Pinehurst also ensured he made his second cut at a Major. He had also made the cut at the British Open last year where he finally finished tied 73rd. Kapur had briefly lead the field in round one of The Open in 2013.
