Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand was named the Asian Tour’s Player of the Decade (2004-2013) at the Asian Tour Annual Awards Night in Jakarta on April 22, 2014. The award was voted by the players in conjunction with the Asian Tour’s milestone 10th season last year following its establishment as a players’ organization in 2004.
Jaidee has an unprecedented three Asian Tour Order of Merit titles and 13 victories under his belt.
Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh, a two-time Asian Tour Order of Merit champion and winner of six Asian Tour titles, was one of the other four nominees for the award along with Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant and Koreans K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang.
Jeev Milkha Singh, however, claimed the award for the lowest putting average in 2013. He recorded a ratio of 1.71 putts per green in regulation.
The 24-year-old Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand was awarded the Asian Tour Order of Merit crown. He won once and posted five other top-five finishes in 2013 to earn over US$1 million, becoming only the second man to achieve the feat in Asian Tour history.
Indians Anirban Lahiri and Gaganjeet Bhullar had finished third and fifth respectively on the 2013 Order of Merit. PGTI member Md Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh had secured fourth place on the merit list.
Kiradech also won the Players’ Player of the Year award and the Special Achievement Award. Siddikur Rahman was one of the nominees for the Special Achievement Award.
The auspicious evening also feted the Asian Team heroes who had staged a memorable comeback to share the inaugural EurAsia Cup with Team Europe in Malaysia last month.
