Local favourite Mithun Perera shoots eight-under-63 for first round lead

Shrestha and Vasudeva in joint second

Local favourite Mithun Perera returned a sizzling eight-under-63 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club to take the opening round lead at the Standard Chartered Open 2014, an event sanctioned by the PGTI. Nepal’s Shivaram Shrestha and India’s Karan Vasudeva carded scores of six-under-65 to be placed joint second.

Defending champion Mithun Perera went on a birdie-blitz on his first-nine making six birdies. He then picked up an eagle on the second to move to eight-under for the day. Perera made bogey-birdie on the sixth and seventh to close the day on top of the leaderboard.

Mithun said, “The playing conditions are good. I’m very pleased with this effort as it sets me up for the remainder of the tournament. I’m very confident of doing well here and look forward to the next three rounds.

Shivaram Shrestha enjoyed a bogey-free round of six-under-65 to be two shots behind the leader.

Shrestha said, “I enjoyed my hitting today and thankfully my putter was also hot. I converted some long putts to gain birdies on the back-nine. It was hot today but the playing conditions were great.”

Karan Vasudeva also had an outstanding start of the tournament and was the highest-placed Indian at joint second. Vasudeva had an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys in his round of six-under-65.
