Ajeetesh Sandhu secures joint second place at Mercuries Taiwan Masters
Rashid Khan is tied fifth and Viraj Madappa takes tied ninth
India’s Ajeetesh Sandhu secured a joint runner-up finish at the Asian Tour's Mercuries Taiwan Masters on Sunday. Ajeetesh, the overnight joint leader, slipped to tied second place in round four after shooting an even-par-72 that saw him close the tournament at a total of nine-under-279, one shot behind the champion Suradit Yongcharoenchai of Thailand.
Sandhu, a winner on the Asian Tour in 2017, made three birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey in his final round. The Chandigarh lad shared the second spot with Brazil's Adilson Da Silva and Philippines' Miguel Tabuena.
While Sandhu signed off with a birdie, a costly double-bogey on 16 effectively ruined his chances of clinching his second Asian Tour title.
It was Ajeetesh's second runner-up finish on the Asian Tour this year and it lifted him to 14th place on the Asian Tour Order of Merit. He had earlier in the year finished second at the Bangabandhu Cup Golf Open in Bangladesh.
Sandhu, currently the highest-placed Indian in the Asian Tour money list, said, "It was a tough day so it was really nice to end it with that birdie on 18. I left a few shots out there and that really cost me the tournament. I made two wrong decisions on 16 and that led to a double bogey and you cannot afford to do that especially when you’re trying to close out the tournament. But I'm happy with how I played and where my game is heading and I can only look forward to the rest of the season."
Rashid Khan's last round of five-under-67 helped him claim tied fifth place at four-under-284.
Viraj Madappa's (76) tied ninth finish at three-under-285 made it three Indians in the top-10.
Khalin Joshi took tied 19th place at one-over-289.
