Anirban Lahiri begins US Open with a three-over-74 to be tied 98th

India's Anirban Lahiri didn't have the ideal start to his third US Open as he posted a three-over-74 in round one to be placed tied 98th, nine off the lead, at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.

Lahiri, playing his 16th Major, began the week with a disastrous opening stretch dropping bogeys on the 10th and 11th and a double-bogey on the 12th. He then conceded another bogey on the fourth to move to five-over for the day through 13 holes.

Anirban, the 2015 Asia No. 1, then staged a brave fightback by picking up three consecutive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes.

However, Lahiri bogeyed his closing ninth hole and had to settle for a 74.

The first round lead was held by Englishman Justin Rose who shot a six-under-65.
