Shubhankar Sharma sizzles with third round 66 at DP World Tour Championship to move into tied ninth, lies four off the lead
India's Shubhankar Sharma, playing with an injured heel, shot a sizzling six-under-66 to move up 11 spots into tied ninth after round three of the European Tour's season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
Twenty-two-year-old Shubhankar, the current Asian Tour Order of Merit leader, had begun the week with a sedate 73 but then fought his way back into contention with scores of 67 and 66 over the next two rounds to take his total to 10-under-206.
Sharma, who made seven birdies against an early bogey, trailed the joint leaders, American Patrick Reed and Englishman Danny Willett, by four shots.
A two-time winner on the European Tour this season, Shubhankar currently leads the race for the tour's Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award. Sharma is ahead of nearest rival Lucas Herbert of Australia by over 400,000 points and the latter is also way behind this week in tied 52nd place. The next man, Sam Horsfield of England is tied 32nd this week.
Interestingly, the best Indian performance at the DP World Tour Championship so far has been tied 13th by Jeev Milkha Singh at the inaugural edition of the event in 2009. Shubhankar now has a chance to better that.
