Viraj Madappa rises to tied third after a 67 in Round 3 of Yeangder TPC, trails leader by one

India’s Viraj Madappa got his title charge back on track at the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship (TPC) after returning a five-under-67 in round three that saw him rise four spots to tied third place.

Madappa (76-66-67) trailed the joint leaders, American John Catlin and Chinese Taipei's Hung Chien-yao, by one shot at the Linkou International Golf and Country Club.

Having missed three consecutive weekend cuts prior to his maiden appearance at the Yeangder TPC this week, young Madappa showed no signs of nerves as he hauled himself back into contention at the US$500,000 event.

Viraj Madappa became the youngest Indian player to win on the Asian Tour after lifting the 2018 TAKE Solutions Masters trophy in August.

He won at the age of 20 years and nine months, breaking the previous record set by Gaganjeet Bhullar, who was 21 years and three months old when he won his first Asian Tour title at the 2009 Indonesia President Invitational.

Viraj said, "Physically I felt I was playing well the last three weeks. I didn’t feel like there was a loss of confidence or anything like that. It was just a bunch of mistakes I made mentally over the last three weeks.

"I had a lot of time in between tournaments to figure out what was going wrong. I sat down, addressed them and told myself to limit the number of mental mistakes in my game. Because of that, I’m heading in the right direction and giving myself more chances now.

"I’ve been in this position many times as a junior and an amateur before so I’m just going to let my natural instinct take over and just play my own game. I just hope for the best result."
