Shubhankar Sharma climbs to tied fifth, Shiv Kapur too makes a move

Seven Indians make the cut

Shubhankar Sharma signed a second straight four-under-68 at the Maybank Championship to climb six spots to tied fifth at eight-under-136 in the second round. He trails the leader Bernd Wiesberger of Austria by four shots at the US$3 million event co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Asian Tour.

Shiv Kapur shot a timely 67 to make huge gains on day two that saw him moving up 21 places to tied seventh at seven-under-137. Anirban Lahiri fired a 68 to also be placed tied seventh as three Indians closed the day inside the top-10.

Seven Indians made the halfway cut of two-under-142.

Shubhankar, India’s rising star, made five birdies against a lone bogey at the Saujana Golf and Country Club’s Palm course on Friday.

Shubhankar said, “I’m really pleased as I played pretty solid. I got the start I wanted and made four birdies on the back nine (his opening nine) and kept it going on the front. I had a few chances for birdies but couldn’t convert.

“I only missed three greens on the front nine and made good up and downs. Pretty pleased and just want to continue doing the same. It’s great to finish well. It’ll be good if I can just do the same thing this weekend.”

Shiv Kapur followed up his first round 70 with an improved 67 that featured eight birdies and three bogeys.

Anirban Lahiri, who shot a first round of 69, also put up a better number in round two, a 68, to zoom up 10 places to joint seventh along with Kapur.

Gaganjeet Bhullar, on the other hand, slipped 11 places from overnight tied third to tied 14th as he followed up his first round 66 with a 72 in round two.

Rashid Khan (72-68) ended round two in tied 29th at four-under-140.

The two other Indians who made the cut were Jyoti Randhawa and Chiragh Kumar (both in tied 51st at two-under-142).
