Shubhankar Sharma lies four behind in second place after round three in Bangladesh

Chiragh Kumar tied fifth, Udayan Mane tied eighth

India’s Shubhankar Sharma (64-68-72) fired a third round of one-over-72 at the Asian Tour’s Bashundhara Bangladesh Open but managed to hold on to his overnight second place.

The 20-year-old Sharma, who started the day one shot back, closed round three four behind the leader Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand at nine-under-204.

Chiragh Kumar (68-70-68) in tied fifth at seven-under-206 and Udayan Mane (71-68-68) in tied eighth at six-under-207 were the other two Indians in the top-10.

Shubhankar couldn’t capitalise on a strong start where he fired three birdies to turn in 32 as he subsequently dropped four shots on his way home for a 72.

Shubhankar said, “It was a really interesting round. I had a superb start but fell back on the back nine. Other than that, I think I still played pretty well. I am still swinging the ball good. I just need to putt slightly better tomorrow and avoid making as many mistakes as I did today.

“I wasn’t thinking much really. I started well and I told myself to keep making birdies on the back nine. The drop shots were costly but I am still in a good position for tomorrow, although I would have liked the gap to be closer. It’s not over yet. I still have another round so I will do my best.”

Home hero Siddikur Rahman, also a PGTI member, kept up the local cheers as he returned with a 68 to trail by five shots in third place with playing partner Dodge Kemmer of the United States, who also signed for a 68, in the full-field Asian Tour event.

While former Asian Tour winner Chiragh Kumar gained two places from his overnight tied seventh thanks to a third round of 68, Udayan Mane too shot a 68 to move up one place from his overnight tied ninth.

Both Rashid Khan (70) and Khalin Joshi (71) were in tied 15th at three-under-210.

M Dharma closed the day in tied 31st at one-over-214 and Mukesh Kumar was a further stroke back in tied 41st.

Honey Baisoya was in tied 47th at three-over-216, Jeev Milkha Singh was tied 56th at four-over-217 and Sujjan Singh was in tied 68th at eight-over-221.
