Jyoti Randhawa part of five-way tie on first day of Resorts World Manila Masters

India’s Jyoti Randhawa was part of a five-way tie for the opening round lead at the US$1 million Resorts World Manila Masters on Thursday.

It was a leaderboard logjam which also featured Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Rattanon Wannasrichan and Johannes Veerman of the United States after the leading players all opened their campaigns at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club with matching eight-under-par 64s.

Randhawa, who was Asia’s number one in 2002, rolled back the years with a commanding performance that showed why he is still highly regarded as one of the region’s top players.

The 44-year-old ran out in 31 after five birdies and ensured his spotless card would continue to remain intact without any bogeys by firing another three birdies on holes 12, 15 and 18 in his back-nine.

“There was no wind today so it can get fairly easy on this golf course when there’s no wind. This golf course seems to set itself up nicely for my style of play so that helps a bit.

“But having said that, you still have to play good golf to do well and I did play some good golf today,” said Randhawa.

Chiragh Kumar was the next best Indian in tied 18th at five-under-67.

Jeev Milkha Singh, SSP Chawrasia and Chikkarangappa S were all in tied 26th with scores of four-under-68.

Gaganjeet Bhullar and Shubhankar Sharma shot scores of 69 to be tied 39th.

Shiv Kapur’s 71 placed him tied 70th while Khalin Joshi was a further shot back in tied 84th.

Rashid Khan (75) was tied 116th and Himmat Rai (76) was tied 120th.
