Chawrasia gains ground in round three, Lahiri struggles

Indian golfers SSP Chawrasia and Anirban Lahiri were placed tied 22nd and tied 57th after posting scores two-under-69 and four-over-75 respectively in the third round of the men’s golf competition at the Rio Olympic Games on Saturday.

Chawrasia (71-71-69) produced India’s first sub-par round of the week to gain eight places from his overnight tied 30th position. The reigning Indian Open champion’s three-day total thus moved to two-under-211.

Lahiri (74-73-75) could not turn around his poor form in round three as he posted a 75, his highest score of the week. The reigning Asian Tour number one thus slipped a further six places from his overnight tied 51st. Anirban’s 54-hole total now stands at nine-over-222.

Justin Rose of Great Britain was the leader at 12-under-201 while Swede Henrik Stenson (11-under-202) and Aussie Marcus Fraser (nine-under-204) were placed second and third respectively at the end of the penultimate round.

Chawrasia built on his opening-hole birdie and made birdies on the fifth and sixth before making a bogey on the seventh. He pulled one back with a birdie on the ninth to make the turn at three-under. On the back-nine, he dropped an early bogey on the 11th, but roared back with birdies on the 13th and 14th.

However, bogeys on the last two holes meant he ended with a 69.

Lahiri got off to a poor start with a bogey on the second. He fought back to bag a birdie on the next hole but was done in by a double bogey on the par-three fourth hole.

Three more bogeys on the seventh, ninth and 14th were followed by a birdie on the 16th as he settled for a 75.

PGTI member Md Siddikur Rahman (75-70-75) of Bangladesh was also struggling to find form. His third round 75 placed him 55th at seven-over-220.
