Slow start for Indians at Rio

Chawrasia tied 27th, Lahiri tied 50th

Indians SSP Chawrasia and Anirban Lahiri made a slow start in round one of the Rio Olympics golf competition as they carded scores of even-par-71 and three-over-74 to be placed tied 27th and tied 50th respectively.

Australia's Marcus Fraser fired a sizzling eight-under-63 to take the round one lead. Canada's Graham Delaet and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson were tied second with scores of five-under-66.

SSP Chawrasia, the reigning Indian Open champion, scored four birdies and an equal number of bogeys on day one.

Chawrasia had a mixed day as he picked up early birdies at the second and fifth before dropping a shot at the seventh to make the turn at one-under.

SSP, a three-time winner on the European Tour, then had a disappointing start to the back nine as he bogeyed the 10th, 12th and 13th while only managing a birdie on the 11th. But he closed with a birdie on the 18th to end the day with a respectable even-par.

Anirban Lahiri, the reigning Asian Tour no. 1, dropped five bogeys against a couple of birdies in his first round effort.

Lahiri began the week with a bogey and then stumbled on two more bogeys at the sixth and eighth holes to make the turn at three-over.

Anirban, a double winner on the European Tour, conceded a couple of more strokes at the 11th and 12th before producing birdies at the 15th and 18th to end the day on a positive note.

PGTI member Md Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh returned a four-over-75 to be placed tied 56th. He sank two birdies at the expense of six bogeys.
