Gaganjeet Bhullar shines on day 1 of King's Cup, lies tied second

India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar grabbed a share of second place on day one of the King’s Cup after shooting a five-under-65. Thailand’s Sattaya Supupramai was the leader at seven-under-63 at the European Tour and Asian Tour joint sanctioned event.

Bhullar, a winner of five Asian Tour events, shared the second spot with Italy’s Francesco Laporta and American Tom Johnson at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club.

Bhullar was determined to work on his putting as he believed that would be the key to victory for him this week.

Gaganjeet marked his card with five birdies, one eagle and two bogeys at the US$750,000 event.

“I’m going to work on my putting as that will be the one aspect that separates the winner from the rest of the field here.

“I’m not really satisfied as I could have done better. But I’ll definitely take it as I’m playing on this golf course for the first time and it’s really treacherous especially the greens,” said Bhullar.

Chiragh Kumar posted a three-under-67 to be tied 10th while Chikkarangappa was tied 19th at two-under-68.

Himmat Rai and Shubhankar Sharma were tied 32nd at 69 and SSP Chawrasia was a further shot back in tied 54th.

Among the other Indians, Jeev Milkha Singh (71) was tied 76th, Shiv Kapur (72) was tied 100th and Rahil Gangjee (73) and Rashid Khan (73) were both tied 117th.
