Rahil Gangjee's opening round of four-under-67 places him two off the lead in tied sixth place in Mauritius

Anirban Lahiri shoots four-over in round 1 of The Players

India’s Rahil Gangjee shot a four-under-67 in the opening round of the inaugural AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a European Tour & Asian Tour co-sanctioned event, to be placed tied sixth, two shots off the lead. The first round lead was jointly held by Korean Jeunghun Wang, Dane Thorbjorn Olesen and Spaniard Carlos Pigem at six-under-65.

Rahil Gangjee, whose mother hails from the host nation Mauritius, had a steady back-nine as he mixed two birdies with a lone bogey. Gangjee then birdied three of his last five holes on the front-nine to end the day in a strong position.

“We were battling out there. It wasn’t easy, it was very, very windy and it started raining and it stopped raining and then it started raining again. It was more tiring than a normal day. I was feeling it towards the end but somehow it came together where I made a few putts,” said Rahil.

Shiv Kapur shot an even-par-71 to be the next best Indian in tied 46th place. Gaganjeet Bhullar was a further shot back in tied 63rd place.

Rashid Khan and Arjun Atwal were in tied 84th with scores of 73.

Meanwhile, at the PGA Tour's The Players being played at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, Anirban Lahiri shot a four-over-76 in the opening round to be tied 122nd, nine shots off the lead.
