Anirban Lahiri bows out of WGC Matchplay
India’s Anirban Lahiri missed out on a spot in the round of 16 at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play on Friday after his defeat to Australia’s Marc Leishman who won 1-up. Leishman made it to the last 16 from Group 6.
Lahiri, the world number 35, was 1-up after he birdied his opening hole but bogeyed the third hole to make it All Square (AS) with the Australian.
The advantage swung to Leishman at the fifth hole when he birdied after the Indian could only make par. The Australian then went 2-up on the ninth with another birdie.
Lahiri had the opportunity to reclaim his advantage over Leishman when the Australian bogeyed 14 to make it AS. But he bogeyed 15, handing victory to the Australian, who would win his next three holes to seal the match 1-up.
Lahiri enjoyed a promising start when he defeated American Ryan Palmer in his opening match but fell to world number six Justin Rose of England in his second match where he battled gallantly before losing on the 19th hole.
