Shiv Kapur prepares for one of the toughest tests in golf

India’s Shiv Kapur has been paired with former Asian Tour no. 1 Liang Wen-chong of China and Germany’s Maximilian Kieffer for the opening two rounds of this week’s US Open which will be played in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The three-ball of Kapur, Liang and Kieffer will tee-off at 8:35 am in the opening round and at 2:20 pm on day two.

The 32-year-old Kapur, all set to play his third Major, is prepared for one of the toughest tests in golf.

“Playing in Major championships is what you play the sport for. The adrenaline and juices that flow in a Major are hard to describe. All said and done at the end of your career, it’s your performances in Majors that you are evaluated upon,” said Kapur.

He added, “It's always been a boyhood dream of mine to play in the US Open especially since I went to college in America and came agonizingly close to qualifying back in 2004 when I was still in college. So now that I'm there I'm going to soak in the whole experience and live the dream.”

Shiv, who was the leader for a short spell during round one of last year’s British Open, mentions the positives he has drawn from his last Major outing.

“The Open championship was a dream come true for me last year. I can always hold my head up high saying that I lead the oldest Major in the world and that the Indian flag was on top of the leaderboard the first day. The one thing I’d like to improve upon is to carry on and capitalize on a good start and not let it slip away. The experience at The Open has given me the belief that I belong at that level.”

Interestingly, the two players Kapur has been paired with have both won a tournament each in India. While Liang won the 2008 Indian Open, Kieffer was victorious at the 2012 Gujarat Kensville Challenge, a European Challenge Tour event.
