Indians off to good start in Singapore, Lankan Perera impressive in round 1
Lahiri, Jeev and Gangjee in top-20
Anirban Lahiri continued his rich form at The Championship in Singapore as he carded a five-under-67 to be placed tied 16th on day one. Jeev Milkha Singh (67) and Rahil Gangjee (five-under through 15 holes) also grabbed a share of 16th position on Thursday.
PGTI member Mithun Perera of Sri Lanka was just two shots off the lead as he returned a scorching seven-under-65 to be in tied sixth. Thai golfer Panuphol Pittayarat was the leader at nine-under-63 at the European Tour and Asian Tour co-sanctioned event.
There was a one-hour rain delay on Thursday morning due to which the round could not be completed. A total of 18 players are yet to complete round one.
Mithun Perera made a dream start to the tournament with birdies on the first four holes. He added four more birdies and a bogey to his card.
Anirban Lahiri, who won on the Asian Tour last week, continued from where he left in Indonesia as he sank an eagle on the second, four birdies and a solitary bogey.
Jeev Milkha Singh showed signs of his return to form since he came up with eight birdies against a bogey and a double-bogey on the opening day at the Laguna National Golf & Country Club.
Rahil Gangjee had produced five birdies in his round when play was suspended due to bad light. He thus ended the day as the third Indian in tied 16th place along with Anirban and Jeev.
Digvijay Singh and SSP Chowrasia were in tied 26th with scores of 68. Chiragh Kumar was a further shot back in joint 48th place.
Rashid Khan’s 72 placed him tied 112th whereas Shiv Kapur was in tied 139th after a round of 74.
Himmat Rai was three-over through 15 holes to be in joint 144th position while Jyoti Randhawa closed the day with a 77 to be placed 154th.
