Arjun Atwal claims tied fifth at The Senior Open to register best finish by an Indian at a Senior Major

Indian golf legend Arjun Atwal created history by registering the best ever finish by an Indian at a Senior Major when he claimed tied fifth place at The Senior Open played at Carnoustie in Scotland.

Atwal fired a final round score of four-over 76 to drop two spots from overnight third place and end up with an impressive tournament total of two-under 286. He thus finished eight shots behind champion K J Choi of Korea.

The 51-year-old Arjun, the only Indian to have won on the PGA Tour, back in 2010, improved upon the previous best by an Indian at a Senior Major which was achieved by Jeev Milkha Singh when he clinched tied 14th place at The Senior Open 2023.

Atwal, a three-time winner on the DP World Tour, had made a slow start to the week with a 75 in round one. However, he bounced back strongly with scores of 68 and 67 in the next two rounds.

In the last round, Atwal didn't have the best of days as he produced four birdies in exchange for six bogeys and a double-bogey. Nonetheless, after being four-over at the turn on a day characterized by tough conditions, Arjun hung in there by playing even-par on the back-nine.

Jeev Milkha Singh (73-76-76-73), the other Indian to have made the cut, finished tied 45th at 10-over 298. Jeev climbed seven spots with his 73 on the last day.
