Shubhankar Sharma fires 67 to move into tied fourth in round three of Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
Shubhankar Sharma (70-71-67) fired the day’s joint lowest score of five-under 67 to move up 10 spots into tied fourth position at eight-under 208 in round three of the DP World Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
Shubhankar is three shots adrift of the leader Scott Jamieson of Scotland and two shots behind joint second-placed Shane Lowry of Ireland and Thomas Pieters of Belgium. Norway's Victor Hovland shares fourth place with Sharma.
Shubhankar, a two-time winner on the DP World Tour, made an eagle, five birdies and a double-bogey during his exceptional third round at the Yas Links Golf Club.
The 35-year-old Sharma, who was overnight tied 14th, began the day with a splendid approach shot on the first hole that set up a four-feet birdie putt for him which he converted. The former Asia No. 1 then hit an erratic tee shot on the sixth that resulted in a double-bogey. However, Shubhankar soon recovered lost ground as he sank a 35-feet eagle putt on the par-5 seventh hole.
Sharma then powered ahead by picking up four more birdies on the ninth, 11th, 14th and 15th where he drained three long putts from a range of nine to 20 feet.
Shubhankar said, "I'm really happy that I struck it well and came back strongly after the double-bogey on the sixth. I created a lot of opportunities for myself.
"It's a game of patience in these extremely windy conditions. The back-nine here is pretty challenging. Except for one bad tee shot on the sixth, I had a solid round.
"I'm feeling recharged and more energetic since my trip back home to India in October last year. I'm all set for the new season."
