Anirban Lahiri’s exceptional third round of 64 catapults him to tied seventh, six off the lead, at the Corales Championship; Arjun Atwal in tied 36th

India’s Anirban Lahiri (69-72-64) shot an exceptional third round of eight-under-64 that catapulted him 47 spots to tied seventh at the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in the Dominican Republic. Lahiri, who was tied 54th at the halfway stage, now lies six shots off the lead with a total of 11-under-205. American Adam Long sits atop the leaderboard at 17-under-199 two ahead of compatriot Hudson Swafford.

Arjun Atwal (73-68-69), the other Indian in the field, shot a three-under-69 in round three to make a gain of 18 spots from overnight tied 54th to tied 36th. His total read six-under-210.

Lahiri, who made a slow start to the week with a triple bogey and a bogey on his second and third holes respectively on day one before recovering well with a first round of 69, went error-free on Saturday. The 33-year-old made four birdies each on the front-nine and back-nine. He made three consecutive birdies on the sixth, seventh and eighth.

Anirban, who had finished tied 36th at the season-opener Safeway Open two weeks back, realized he was driving well but not hitting the irons as well to give himself enough birdie chances. Lahiri thus had a chat with his coach and put in some work with the irons after the second round.

Interestingly, Lahiri’s lowest score on the PGA Tour is nine-under-61 which he had carded at the A Military Tribute at Greenbrier in July 2018.

Atwal had six birdies and three bogeys during his last round of 69. Arjun, who was lying tied 105th after round one, thus made big gains for the second day running.
