Himmat Rai & Viraj Madappa inch closer to earning their Asian Tour cards; Six Indians make the cut after round four of Asian Tour Q School Final Stage
At the end of round four of the Asian Tour’s Qualifying School Final Stage in Thailand, six out of the total 11 Indians made the 72-hole cut which was set at two-over-286.
Former Asian Tour winner Himmat Rai in tied 18th and 2017 PGTI Emerging Player of the Year Viraj Madappa in tied 24th were the best performers among the Indians after four rounds and thus inched closer to earning their full playing rights for 2018.
Among the 153 players who had made the 36-hole cut, a total of 78 progressed into the fifth and final round. The fourth round lead was shared by Australians Maverick Antcliff and Steven Jeffress, Thailand’s Sorachut Hansapiban and Korea’s Seungtaek Lee at 10-under-274.
Himmat Rai (71-71-71-66) shot a fourth round of five-under-66 that lifted him 44 places to tied 18th at five-under-279. Rai, the highest placed Indian after round four, was on fire from the fifth to the 10th as he made an eagle and five birdies on that stretch.
Himmat is now in line to regain his Asian Tour card after a gap of one year.
Viraj Madappa (73-67-69-72), on the other hand, fired a one-over-72 in round four to drop seven places to tied 24th at three-under-281. However, Madappa is still well placed to earn his maiden Asian Tour card.
At the conclusion of 90 holes, the top 35 players and ties, will earn their full playing rights for the 2018 season.
The other Indians who made the 72-hole cut were, Angad Cheema, Veer Ahlawat and M Dharma, all in tied 56th at one-over-285 and Deepinder Singh Kullar who was a further stroke back in tied 68th.
