SSP Chawrasia slips on final day in Hong Kong, finishes tied seventh

Shubhankar Sharma takes a share of 10th place

India's SSP Chawrasia returned a two-over-72 on the final day of the UBS Hong Kong Open to slip from the overnight lead to tied seventh. Chawrasia ended the US$2 million event with a total score of eight-under-272 to finish three shots behind the eventual champion Wade Ormsby of Australia.

Chawrasia (65-66-69-72), looking to become the first wire-to-wire champion of the European Tour and Asian Tour joint sanctioned UBS Hong Kong Open, enjoyed the lead till the eighth hole as he looked in control with birdies on the second, third and eighth.

The man looking to become the first Indian to win five European Tour titles, then had a disastrous triple bogey on the ninth that saw him drop to two shots behind the lead.

SSP showed signs of recovering with his birdie on the 10th but four bogeys over the next five holes dashed his title hopes. The 39-year-old from Kolkata did manage to pull one shot back with a birdie on the 16th.

Chawrasia said, "I was playing well today. I had a good start and then made a triple bogey on nine and from then on, I kept dropping shots. I had a couple of putts missed, but that’s all right. It’s part of the game.

"There are three events more to play and there’s a good chance for me on the Asian Tour Order of Merit. It’s not over yet at least for the Order of Merit title," added SSP, who is currently in fourth place on the 2017 Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Shubhankar Sharma shot a last round of three-under-67 to gain nine spots and claim tied 10th place at seven-under-273.

Rashid Khan was tied 31st at two-under-278 while Mukesh Kumar finished tied 62nd at five-over-285.
