Anirban Lahiri secures tied fifth at The CJ Cup in Korea
Leader at one stage in round four, Lahiri slips after a torrid back-nine
Anirban Lahiri of India came within striking range of his first PGA Tour title at The CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges on Sunday. However, the Indian finally slipped and closed the week in tied fifth after a torrid back-nine in round four.
Lahiri (69-71-69-74) returned a final round of two-over-74 to total five-under-283 for the week.
The tournament played at Jeju Island in Korea was won by Justin Thomas of the United States who defeated Australian Marc Leishman in a playoff after the two players had completed the regulation 72 holes with identical totals of nine-under-279.
Anirban, who was tied third and two off the lead after the penultimate round, made a solid start with a birdie and eight pars on the front-nine on yet another extremely windy day.
Lahiri, playing in the leader group alongside third round leaders Justin Thomas and Scott Brown, was the sole leader for most part of the front-nine. Anirban emerged leader after he birdied the third and the American duo of Thomas and Brown double-bogeyed the third and fourth respectively.
Lahiri continued to be in contention in the early stages of the back-nine when he sank a birdie on the 12th.
However, the Indian star's troubles began on the 14th where he dropped his first bogey of the day. That was followed by a double-bogey on the par-4 15th that saw Anirban's challenge come to an end. The 30-old's third shot, a chip from the fringe, rolled back on the downhill slope towards him that finally resulted in the double-bogey.
Thereafter, Anirban was overtaken by two strokes by the likes of Justin Thomas and the Australian duo of Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith.
Lahiri, lying tied fourth after 17 holes, dropped one spot further as a result of his bogey on the closing 18th.
