Americans surge ahead on Day 1 of Presidents Cup
Lahiri to play his first match on Friday
The Americans got off to a strong start on day one of the 2017 Presidents Cup being played at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey. The US Team lead the International Team 3½ - 1½ after the five foursomes matches played on Thursday.
Indian star Anirban Lahiri was not part of the International Team line-up on the first day.
Americans Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler lost only two holes in a 6 & 4 victory over Internationals Charl Schwartzel and Hideki Matsuyama.
Jordan Spieth holed a 35-foot putt that sent him and Patrick Reed to another victory over Emiliano Grillo and Si Woo Kim with a 5 & 4 margin.
Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar then defeated Jhonattan Vegas and Adam Scott with a 1 UP scoreline thus taking the US to a 3 – 0 lead.
The Internationals finally got themselves on the board with one point when the South African duo of Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace trounced Americans Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger with a 3 & 1 margin.
The tough, wind-swept afternoon at Liberty National ended with Australians Jason Day and Marc Leishman scoring another half point for the Internationals as they halved their match against Americans Phil Mickelson and Kevin Kisner.
Friday features five matches of fourballs, followed by a full day of foursomes and fourballs on Saturday and the decisive singles on Sunday.
Anirban Lahiri will be playing his first match at this year's event on Friday when he partners South African Charl Schwartzel in their fourball match against Americans Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell.
