The Indian star, who recently also made it to the International Team for next month's Presidents Cup, for the second time in his career, fired seven birdies against three bogeys in the opening round of the BMW Championship on Thursday.
Elsewhere, at the Asian Tour's Shinhan Donghae Open in Korea, Rahil Gangjee was the best placed Indian at the halfway stage. He was in tied 27th position at one-under-141.
